Genetics and how genes affect your weight loss

Genetics and how genes affect your weight loss

Genetics plays an important role when it comes to the weight loss journey. Our DNA determines our hair color, nose shape, eye color, etc. We are unique but we inherit many traits from our parents and their parents and so on. Truth to be told, each of us will react differently to an exercise program. This is the reason why general advice and a myriad of diets don’t produce any valuable long-term results. Can you still do the work and lose weight despite your genetic predisposition? You bet.

A little bit of research

Zhaoping Li, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA, stated this year,

“We know from research that some genetic predisposition increases your risk to be overweight and obese, but it can be overcome by your healthy lifestyle… genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger. Genetics does play a role, but the truth is who you are is still determined by how you live your life.”

So how we live our lives matters, our activity and nutritional lifestyle are very important pieces to our weight loss puzzle.

Some specific types of genes that researchers found to influence our appetite, ability to burn calories, use our energy, and our body composition are: FTO Gene, MC4R, ANKYRIN-B, PANX1, and IRX3.

I will write briefly about IRX3 gene.

According to scientists, IRX3 is a gene that may cause difficulty in individuals to lose weight. There have been studies that show that people who showed a deficiency of this gene, lost weight 30 % faster than those people who had enough amount of this type of gene. Interesting isn’t it?

How we live our lives matters

Some people need to put more effort than others to lose weight. Why is that? Partly because of our genetics, what we talked about, and partly because our unhealthy lifestyle habits are so ingrained in our brain that it’s hard to break out. Change is hard. Someone makes the switch quickly and says, ” It’s enough“, and someone needs time. We are all different but if we want to lose weight, we need to change how we live because how we live our lives matter. It matters to us and it matters to generations to come after us.

Let’s change what we are in control of

We cannot change our genetics but we can change our lifestyle. In our previous blog posts, we talked about healthy activity and nutritional lifestyle design.

We can change what we are in control of. We can change how we choose to act, to grab a healthy piece of fruit instead of that bar of chocolate, to go on a 30-60 min walk outside every day instead of sitting on the couch and watching TV. In short, we are in control of our daily choices. Small not-so-wise choices eventually turn into a big problem later on. Everything accumulates and is interconnected.

If you want to know more about your specific genes…

If you want to know more about your specific genes there is a service called 23andme. You can do your DNA test with them. Note that I am just mentioning the service, TrainChampion platform doesn’t have any partnership with the company.

Final word of advice on the topic

I believe our present daily lifestyle matters more than our genetics. Anybody can lose weight, some need to put more effort and changes than others but the results will come. You need to focus on what you can change and your daily choices.

It’s on you. Make that change. Success lies in healthy lifestyle habits practiced every day.
