Healthy social circle and why is it important to your weight loss
For an efficient and healthy weight loss, you need to be surrounded by people who believe in you and support you on your journey. You need to create a healthy social circle. Having only one doubter or negative person around you can affect the achievement of your goal. This has been proven over and over again in studies. To achieve your weight loss goal, your mind has to believe it without a slight doubt. If that mind gets disturbed by negative thoughts, it will lose the absolute faith needed to lose weight. So please pay attention to what type of people you allow to be around you when embarking on your weight loss journey.
What is a healthy social circle?
A healthy social circle is a group of people who support and encourage each other to be the best version of themselves. In the weight loss case, a healthy circle is a group of people, ideally on the same journey, who encourage and inspire each other. They push each other to be consistent with new lifestyle habits, personalised exercise, and nutritional program. When one person doesn’t feel like doing the workout or going to the Gym, the other person pulls him towards a new emotional state. An emotional state that is ready and inspired to do the necessary work.
You see, the greatest benefit of a healthy circle is accountability. When you are surrounded by negative people who don’t care about you losing weight, they will not keep you accountable and as a consequence will pull you to their level, to their mindset.
It’s possible to be surrounded by negative people who don’t believe you can lose weight but can hold you accountable. This can be a very powerful fuel but it doesn’t last. Proving someone wrong is not a healthy place you want to be. It’s better to distance yourself from these people and use the encouragement, inspiration, and support from your healthy circle.
The importance of a healthy social circle
But why is so important to design your healthy social circle? The simple explanation I can give you is because we want to lose weight faster and in the most efficient way. If we hang out with the people who don’t believe we can do it, we can stay on our weight loss journey for years. Don’t underestimate the power of association.
Let me tell you a true story. I helped this girl lose weight, her name was Mary. When I examined her social circle, she was hanging out with the people who partied almost every day and didn’t exercise at all. Her friends didn’t care about her losing weight, they were more concerned about where is the next party and who will be there. I suggested her to distance herself from these friends and make new friends in the fitness class, Zumba in her local Gym, that I advised her to enroll in. Furthermore, I mentioned that there are plenty of online communities around weight loss and that she can find further support there. By re-creating her healthy social circle, she started losing weight. This story proves and validates the importance of a healthy social circle.
When it comes to choosing your friends, choose those that believe in you, those who lift you and will encourage you when you slip.
How to create your new healthy social circle
Creating a new healthy social circle is a deliberate action which means you need to do the work and select the people who are positive and encouraging.
Here are some of my suggestions:
- Ideally, surround yourself with the people who are on the same weight loss journey as you are. This condition doesn’t mean that these people will be positive and encouraging so make sure to surround yourself with people who believe they can lose weight and who are willing to do whatever it needs to achieve the goal.
- One of the best ways to create a new healthy social circle is to find people in your local gym, fitness class, or an online weight loss community. These people already took the first important step so they will be in the same mindset as you.
- Another idea is to create your own mastermind, call it a group of people on the same weight loss journey who meet regularly at least once per week and share their personalised journey.
People who are fit and exercise regularly usually attract other people who are fit and exercise as well. So by being proactive and putting the work and necessary sacrifices, you will attract the right people into your circle.
Final word of advice on a healthy social circle
People have the power to lift you up or put your down, to tear your dreams and goals apart, or carry you to your success. Surround yourself with the people who will lift you up when you stumble and carry you to your success. By carrying I mean supporting and encouraging. If you take this piece of advice from this blog post to your heart, you are one step closer to your weight loss goal.
